Michigan State University has raised more than $1 billion in private donations and endowments in a campaign started three years ago to raise $1.2 billion by 2007. The gifts have boosted the university's ranking among the top 50 public universities in terms of endowments. About a quarter of the donations are endowments. The remaining $750 million raised will go toward such things as programs, faculty salaries and scholarships.
